Bisphosphonates are the group of drugs that prevent bone resorption and hence are used to treat various diseases and conditions involving bone fragility like osteoporosis, Pagetâ€™s disease, hypercalcaemia of malignancy and multiple myeloma.1The â€œbisâ€ prefix is a term indicating two - phosphonate groups, attached to a common carbon atom. These are structurally similar to natural pyrophosphate (PP), which is a normal product of human metabolism that has a calcium chelating property.
