ABSTRACT
Bhagandara, also known as one of the Ashtamaharoga (eight major diseases), is a condition described by Acharya Sushruta as particularly challenging to treat. Ayurvedic texts provide comprehensive details on this disease, covering its causes, symptoms, types, preventive measures, and treatment options. Ayurveda advocates a multi-faceted approach to address this severe condition. Acharya Sushruta's para-surgical and surgical techniques have proven effective in managing Bhagandara, with Ksharsutra treatment emerging as a globally accepted, safe, and effective remedy. Initially, modern surgical methods like Fistulotomy and Fistulectomy were seen as breakthroughs for treating this disease. However, their long-term side effects, such as incontinence and recurrence, have rendered these methods unsuitable for many patients. Consequently, a significant number of patients are now opting for Ayurvedic Ksharsutra therapy. The growing popularity and effectiveness of Ksharsutra treatment are evident as modern surgeons increasingly refer patients to Ayurvedic practitioners for successful management.
