ABSTRACT
Background: Early detection of potentially malignant disorders is still a diagnostic challenge for most of clinicians, and ideal adjuncts for detection of these lesions are currently unavailable. The problems in evaluating and diagnosing of potentially malignant disorders of oral cavity arise mostly due to lack of calibration of criteria regarding the histological grading. Aims & Objectives: The current study aimed whether a set of special stains (PAS,MT Stain, Mucicarmine stain and immunohistochemical stains) can have diagnostic edge over traditional stains.. The present study correlates the expression of these stains with neoplastic potentiality & risk of local recurrence. Methodology: A total of 350 cases were subjected to staining to various stains and immuno-histochemical stains. The intensity, pattern and localization of stains was seen in different components of epithelium, stroma, extracellular matrix and surrounding tissues. The results were statistically interpreted. Results: There were statistically significant differences between OSMF, OED, OLP and OSCC as far as staining by various special stains was concerned. Conclusion: This study discloses a definite relationship between the intensity, pattern and localization of staining and invasive potential of different lesions. The prognostic potential is evident when immuno-histochemical methods are used.
Keywords: PAS stain, Mucicarmine stain, CK-7, Spp1, Extracellular matrix.
