ABSTRACT
Erythema multiforme (EM) is an acute inflammatory disorder, mediated by the immune system that is typically self-limiting but often recurrent. It commonly affects the oral cavity (in 95-100% of cases), eyes (70-75%), and genitalia (60-65%), and may occasionally involve the pharynx, larynx, esophagus, and respiratory tract. The condition is characterized by irregular, painful lesions, often found on the lips, buccal mucosa, and tongue, and is frequently preceded by systemic symptoms such as malaise, fever, and headache. Based on these signs and symptoms, EM can be compared to the condition described in Ayurveda as Tridoshaja Sarvasara Mukhapaka, which presents with symptoms like burning sensation (daha), ulceration (paka),toda, and the formation of sores etc. A 22-year-old female patient presented to our OPD with complaints of blisters on her lips and oral cavity, accompanied by fever, pain, a burning sensation in the mouth, and difficulty swallowing for the past 15 days. She reported having experienced similar episodes 6-7 times over the years. She had previously sought treatment at several modern medical facilities, where she was prescribed antibiotics and oral steroids. However, due to the recurrent nature of her symptoms and the side effects from high doses of steroids, she sought further management at our Ayurveda hospital.
