AN OVERVIEW OF EPILEPSY AND ITS TREATMENT REGIMEN IN SCIENTIFIC ERA

ABSTRACT
Epilepsy is one of the most common neurological disorders affecting over 70 million people around the world. Although there are certain causes of epilepsy, often the origin is unknown. Patients suffering from epilepsy need specific and long-term checkup. Inspite of available treatments to control seizures, novel approaches are required to achieve goal. Antiepileptic drugs (AED’s) control 50% of patients at the cost of adverse side effects. The choice of treatment stands in need of frequent observation. This article furnishes a review on seizures and epilepsy for neuroscientists. The review provides an overview on fundamental conditions of seizures and epilepsy inclusive of history, classification, epidemiology, etiology, pathophysiology, mechanism of action and treatment approaches along with established antiepileptic drugs.
