ABSTRACT
Introduction: Danazol is a derivative of the synthetic steroid ethisterone that suppresses the production of gonadotrophins and has some weak androgenic effects. Although effective for endometriosis, its use is limited by its masculinizing side-effects. Its role as a treatment for endometriosis has been largely replaced by the GnRH agonists. Objectives: To determine the efficacy of vaginal danazol in females presenting with endometriosis. Study design: Descriptive study. Materials & Methods: A total of 93 women with endometriosis, 20 to 40 years of age were included. Patients with pelvic inflammatory disease and diabetes mellitus were excluded. Then females were prescribed vaginal Danazol 200mg once daily for 6 months. They were then advised to present in OPD after 6 months. Their follow up ultrasound and CA 125 levels were done. If CA 125 levels were normal and USG did not show any recurrence, then treatment was labeled as effective. Results: Mean age was 27.20 ± 5.04 years. Mean duration of endometriosis was 4.56 ± 1.86 months. Efficacy of vaginal danazol in females presenting with endometriosis was seen in 65 (69.89%) patients, whereas 28 (30.11%) patients did not show any response. Conclusion: This study concluded that vaginal danazol is quite effective in females presenting with endometriosis.
