ABSTRACT
Artava, the vital component of the female reproductive system in Ayurveda, originates from Rasa Dhatu and undergoes physiological processes governed by Agni (Metabolic fire) and Doshas (Vata, Pitta, Kapha). Disruptions in Dosha equilibrium lead to Artava Dushti, impacting the menstrual cycle and reproductive health. Ashta Artava Dushti encompasses eight distinct types, classified based on Dosha dominance and specific Lakshanas (Symptoms). These include Vataja (Characterized by scanty, painful flow), Pittaja (Marked by burning sensation and foul-smelling discharge), and others like Kaphaja, Raktaja, and Granthibhuta Dushti etc. The condition reflects systemic and local imbalances that can contribute to infertility. Shuddha Artava (Pure menstrual blood) is essential in conception. Alterations in the quality, color, and consistency of Artava signify underlying hormonal and structural dysfunctions, such as endometrial irregularities and anovulation, reducing fertility potential. Artava Dushti is linked to various gynecological conditions (Yoni Vyapad, Asrugdara) and systemic factors that impair implantation and ovulation. The Ayurvedic framework offers a comprehensive lens to understand menstrual disorders' etiology and their implications on fertility. The approach to diagnosing and treating Artava Dushti involves identifying Nidanas (Causes), assessing and decoding Lakshanas, and addressing imbalances through Shodhana (Purification therapies) and Shamana (Pacifying treatments), tailored to the dominant Dosha.
