ABSTRACT
The drug delivery by topical route is a convenient way for both local and systemic treatment. The topical cream is a localized system for drug delivery anywhere in the body via skin, rectal, ophthalmic and vaginal routes. Skin is the most extensive and easily accessible organ for topical drug administration. Cream formulations are stable and provides better absorption and bioavailability of drug as compared to other topical route formulations. Sesbania sesban Linn (Family: Fabaceae) is well known plant widely distributed in India and other tropical countries. The leaves of Sesbania sesban has traditionally been used as purgative, demulcent, maturant, anthelmintic and for all pains and inflammation. Conventional therapy shows varied side effects and thus it is need of hour to find an alternative therapy. Herbal therapy is the best option here. Thus, the present study focuses on preparation of ethanolic extract of Sesbania sesban Linn and formulating it in a patient friendly formulation i.e. Cream. The cream was formulated and optimized by using 32 factorial design with concentration of corn oil and tween 80: span 80 as factors and globule diameter, flux, spreadability as responses. The cream with 3 % corn oil and 4.5% tween 80: span 80 were considered as optimized. The optimized cream showed maximum drug release through drug (corn oil) present in oil phase and cream was found to give good results.
