REVIEW ATICLE ON CONCEPT OF RAKTAMOKSHANA

ABSTRACT
Rakta is stated to be the Moola or root of the body, as it causes Dharana, hence it is known as Dhatu. Thus Rakta needs to be cared of and well protected as it is as important as Jeeva and it is one of the Pranayatana. Raktamokshana in other words, Bloodletting is a kind of Para surgery directed for the treatment of specifically Raktaja roga (blood born diseases) and Pittaja vyadhi’s along with other many surgical diseases. Acharya Sushruta propounds practical guidelines for bloodletting and claims it as most effective therapy in half of the body ailments[1] Among various methods for bloodletting[2] such as Jalaukavacharana Karma, Prachhanna Karma[3], Siravedhana Karma, Jalaukaavacharna Karma[4] (Leech therapy) is considered as the ideal method to expel out the vitiated blood safely, quickly, and effectively. Siravedhana Karma (Vein puncture) is routinely practiced in the past and so much importance is given to it in classics.
