EFFECT OF KETOGENIC DIET ON METABOLIC SYNDROME – A REVIEW

ABSTRACT
The metabolic syndrome is emerging threat and is the leading cause for death in the present world. It is bunching risk factors of cardiovascular disease, diabetes mellitus, and abdominal obesity. There are various causes for metabolic syndrome, nutritional habit of individual is important among them. Ketogenic diet is one of the trending diets these days and its effect on metabolic syndrome is completely unknown. During low carbohydrate condition body enters the catabolic state obliging to make metabolic changes such as gluconeogenesis and ketogenesis to supply energy by the production of ketone bodies. Ketogenic diet maintain the good lipid profile, lower the triglycerides and has optimist effect on the cholesterol reduction, high density lipoprotein, reduction in the elevated blood pressure and on reduction obesity by suppressing the leptin levels. Ketogenic diet causes diabetic keto acidosis in diabetic patients and also increases the viscosity of RBC. Ketogenic diet has both pros and cons depending upon the individual health status.
