BOTOX: A NEW ERA IN ESTHETIC DENTISTRY

ABSTRACT
Botox (Onabotulinium toxin A) is purified exotoxin of clostrodium botulinum; an anaerobic bacteria. Previously Botox was approved by USFDA only for crossed eyes (strabismus) and abnormal muscle spasms of the eyelids (blepharospasm).But in recent years; Botox therapy has gained considerable importance in dentistry with wide variety of applications. Botox inhibits the release of acetylcholine from motor nerve endings and reduced muscle tone and contraction. This review discusses about use of Botox in management of muscle-generated dental diseases like temporomandibular disorders, bruxism, clenching, masseter hypertrophy, dentofacial aesthetics, gummy smile etc.
