BILAYER TABLET TECHNOLOGY: A CONCISE REVIEW

ABSTRACT

Bi-layer tablet is a new era for successful development of controlled release formulation along with several features to provide successful drug delivery. Bilayer tablet in the last few decade had developed an interest in developing a combination of two or more active pharmaceutical ingredients in a single dosage form which promotes patient compliance and Elegance to product. Bi-layer tablet is suitable for release of two drugs in combination in which one Layer is immediate release as initial dose and second layer is loading dose. Bi layer tablets are an effective drug delivery system for the treatment of analgesic, hypertension and diabetes because in these diseases combination therapies are often used. Bilayer tablet is beneficial technology to overcome the shortcoming of the single layered tablet. This review explains the therapeutic advantages of bilayer tablet by releasing the medicaments for the immediate relief and then maintaining the level of medicament for the certain time in order to get the sustain release of drug. Several pharmaceutical companies are currently developing bi-layer tablets due to various reasons; reduce frequency, patient compliance, therapeutic benefits and reduces cost of treatment. To reduce capital investment, quite often existing but modified tablet presses are used to develop such type of tablets. This article explains the latest development and production of quality bilayer tablets by overcoming common problems, such as layer separation, insufficient hardness, cross contamination between the layers, inaccurate individual layer weight control, reduced yield etc. Bilayer tablet have been controlled release in order to prevent undesirable side effects.
