ABSTRACT
Tuberculosis, a disease caused predominantly by Mycobacterium tuberculosis.[1] Tuberculosis (TB) is an old disease – studies of human skeletons showed that it has affected humans for thousands of years.[2] The cause remained unknown until 24 March 1882, when Dr. Robert Koch announced that he had discovered the bacillus Mycobacterium tuberculosis, an event that is now commemorated every year as World TB Day.[3] It causes ill-health in millions of people each year and in 2015, was one of the top 10 causes of death worldwide, ranking above HIV/AIDS as one of the leading causes of death from an infectious disease.4 In India more than 6000 people develop TB disease every-day and more than 600 people die of TB (i.e. 2 deaths every 5 min).[1]
